The compact SUV space in India is crowded, competitive and full of choices that look good on paper. If I were buying one today, purely based on spec sheets, engine options and overall positioning, these five would make my shortlist. But mind you, this is not based on real-world testing, which brings out the quirks of using a car on a daily basis. Each model brings a distinct strength to the table, whether it’s design, power, fuel efficiency or an overall balance of everything:
The Venue still stands out for its clean design and premium cabin feel. Engine options include a 1.2-litre petrol (82 bhp) and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol producing around 118 bhp and 172 Nm. Transmission choices range from manual and iMT to a 7-speed DCT. On paper, the Venue looks like a tech-heavy, refined urban SUV that prioritises comfort and features over outright aggression.
If power matters to you, the XUV 3XO makes a strong case. Its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is offered in multiple tunes, with the top version pushing close to 128 bhp, while the 1.5-litre diesel delivers a hefty 300 Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic options are available. Add strong safety specs, and the 3XO clearly targets buyers who enjoy spirited performance.

The Brezza plays to Maruti Suzuki’s core strengths, fuel efficiency, affordability and ease of ownership. The 1.5-litre petrol engine makes about 101 bhp, while the factory-fitted CNG version offers lower running costs. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. It may not be flashy, but on paper, the Brezza is a dependable, no-nonsense compact SUV.
Skoda Kylaq
The Skoda Kylaq makes a strong first impression with its solid build and safety focus. It uses a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 114 bhp and 178 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic. A large boot and a strong safety rating give it an edge for buyers who value quality materials and driving fundamentals over feature count.

The Sonet sits right in the middle, doing a bit of everything well. It’s 1.0-litre turbo-petrol makes around 118 bhp, paired with manual, iMT or 7-speed DCT options. Feature levels are high, the cabin feels premium, and engine choices cover most needs. On specs alone, the Sonet feels like the most well-rounded compact SUV in this list.
