Luis Díaz and Jáminton Campaz scored second-half goals to give Colombia a 3-1 win over debutants Uzbekistan as the last two teams to start their World Cup campaign clashed in the Azteca stadium in Mexico City.
Abbosbek Fayzullaev had cancelled out Daniel Muñoz’s first-half opener, but a strike from Diaz put Bayern Munich ahead before Campaz’s late header finally saw off a battling Uzbekistan.
The lead lasted just five minutes as Yusupov was unable to keep out a shot from Diaz as Colombia poured forward in numbers after winning possession in midfield.
Substitute Campaz wrapped it up late on with a header from Cucho Hernández’s cross in the ninth minute of stoppage time, although teenager Bekhruz Karimov still had time to hit the crossbar.
